Mount Hakodate night view
Shinkansen from Tokyo (4 hrs)
Japan meets the world. The architecture tells the story of opening to foreign trade. The morning market is chaotic and delicious. The night view lives up to the hype.
Hakodate was one of the first Japanese ports opened to foreign trade in 1859. The Motomachi district still shows this history — Russian Orthodox churches, British consulates, and Japanese temples share the same hillside. The night view from Mount Hakodate is considered one of the world's three best.
